The Belfast Newsie was born in 2019 with a dual purpose, to bring an authentic handmade fashion staple to market whilst helping the homeless and in need with the sale profits.
Someone who'd spent 9 months homeless and sleeping rough in Belfast provided us with invaluable information about the lifestyle the numbers and the people on our streets. We learned about the many organisations and agencies who genuinely help. We asked the question, of all the local services and Charities who would benefit most from support and it was clear that the Welcome Organisation was the users choice. We met with their team and over time we saw first-hand how many people relied on their drop in centre and we saw the range of services they were providing to the homeless and in need. Working closely with all other agencies they provide an invaluable and essential service for the people on the streets and those defined as homeless and vulnerable.
The 8-piece cap is a clothing staple indigenous to Belfast and to other parts of these islands . Featuring in so many images and sculptures around Belfast from Colin Davidsons shipyard paintings, the 'Titanic Yardsmen' of the Newtownards Road and championed by local artist Terry Bradley famous the world over. Given the rise in Peaky Blinders style 1920’s fashion suited to all age groups and genders The Belfast Newsie will always remain timeless.
This is a high-quality product with local Ulster provenance. An article of clothing that brings pleasure to those giving and receiving and sure to become an heirloom.
The good people of Magee referred me to Hanna Hats of Donegal for manufacture. A truly family oriented company with a global reputation for quality. We selected a dark charcoal herringbone in a Harris Tweed bringing a little Ulster Scots to a now bespoke product.
This style of cap has any number of names. Newsboy, Bakerboy, Gatsby, Duncher however seeing it referred to casually as a “Newsie” - “The Belfast Newsie” gave the product an identity of its own.
Panache Packaging of Cookstown and Fresh Graphics at Titanic ensured this hand made product was presented in style.
When the first order was ready we made the trip to Donegal where Eleanor Hanna and her team gave us a warm welcome. The skill and craftsmanship of her factory staff was a real treat to witness and one that we have shared in our promotional film.
